Kevin Hayakawa, Secretary

Dr. Kevin Hayakawa was elected to the Rowland Unified School District (RUSD) Board of Education in November 2022. He proudly represents Trustee Area 5, which is majority Asian Pacific Islander (API), and includes portions of Rowland Heights, Walnut, West Covina, Brea, and the City of Industry. He proudly attended RUSD public schools for his entire K-12 education, which culminated in earning an International Baccalaureate diploma from Rowland High School. Dr. Hayakawa went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley in Physics and Astrophysics, a master’s degree in Astronomy from UCLA, and a Ph.D. in Astronomy and Astrophysics, also from UCLA. He now teaches Physics and Astronomy as an Assistant Professor at the Channel Islands campus of the California State University system.

Prior to serving on the RUSD Board of Education, Dr. Hayakawa was an elected board member for the Walnut Valley Water District from 2020-22, where he successfully led the District in meeting the Governor’s ambitious drought conservation goals through outreach and education. In addition, he has served the greater Rowland Heights community as the Adult Volunteer Coordinator for the Buckboard Days Parade, helping to successfully bring back a cherished annual community tradition for its 50th Anniversary celebration, after a 3-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Hayakawa is passionate about advocating for all of our students, but especially our most vulnerable ones, including students with special needs, the LGBTQIA+ community, and our minority student populations including API.
