Gene Kim joined the APISBMA Board in 2025 and stepped up to be Treasurer. Gene Kim is an attorney with 15+ years of cross-sector experience in law, policy, foundations, small businesses, and start-ups. As a son of immigrants and a product of California public schools, Gene understands first-hand how a high-quality education can transform lives, open new doors of opportunity, and empower every child to achieve their potential and build a solid foundation for future success. Gene is also the proud father of children who were raised in the district and have attended three San Mateo-Foster City elementary schools.
Gene began his career working on education policy as a Hill staffer in the U.S. Congress and went on to serve as the Executive Director of a Congressional entity dedicated to ensuring that diverse communities have a voice and representation at the highest levels of government. Gene also previously managed award-winning multilingual public awareness campaigns in Spanish and Asian languages, helped to pass state and local ballot measures to fund K-12 education and new school construction, and advised the nation’s largest community college district on crisis communications, the California College Promise program, and initiatives to support immigrant students. Gene continues to serve as a board member and advisor to multiple national non-profit and political organizations.
Gene earned a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, a J.D. from the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management. In his spare time, Gene enjoys traveling, trying new restaurants, and exploring nature with his family.
