Rosa Kim is a board member of Fremont Union High School District. She was born in Seoul, Korea and worked as a TV writer until she moved to the US in 2000 with her husband and 18-month old daughter. She wrote articles and a column about education in the US for Korean women’s magazines and continued to write for local Korean American TV while raising two children in California. ‘
As a first generation Korean-American, she worked at Silicon Valley Korean School (501C3), the biggest Korean language school in the US, for 13 years, as a history instructor, bilingual program teacher, principal, and most recently, director of the SVKS Community Center. She is co-author of a series of Korean history textbooks: Find Korea, Explore Korea, and Korean History and Culture Curriculum for Overseas Korean Schools. She also coordinated an annual seminar on Korean history and culture for local K-12 educators from 2009 to 2016 and has continued to support the workshop programs as an advisor. She is passionate about cultural education, believing it is essential in helping students embrace their identities and grow into confident, empathetic leaders within their communities. With this mission in mind, she co-founded the Young Korean American Academy, which has served local students since 2012 through its annual summer history and culture camp. During the pandemic, as a board member of the Asian American Parent Association, she co-founded the AAPI Multicultural Festival. She saw the festival as a way to celebrate the contributions and cultures of the AAPI community while fostering connections to help combat AAPI hate. She previously served as treasurer for the Santa Clara County School Boards Association and currently serves as co-president of the Asian American Parent Association. She continues to be committed to contributing to the broader community while navigating the challenges of being an immigrant parent.
