Sylvia Leong was appointed to the Cupertino Union School District Governing Board in 2019 and recently elected to her second term. CUSD serves over 15,000 students in six cities in the Silicon Valley, including Cupertino, Sunnyvale, San Jose, Saratoga, Santa Clara and Los Altos. Sylvia has been working in education and with students for over 20 years, both professionally and in community service. Her professional background spans classroom experience to higher education administration, as an English teacher in China and substitute teacher in CUSD, to Sr. Admissions Director at USC Marshall School of Business, Director of Admissions at Carnegie Mellon University Silicon Valley, and freshman reader at UC Berkeley. She has been an active parent volunteer in CUSD and Fremont Union High School District for over 12 years, serving as CLIPCO President, Meyerholz PTA Safe Routes, CUSD Parent Advisory Committee, and Graduation Chair, and as Lynbrook Aletheia club advisor and Lynbrook Athletics coordinator. Sylvia also serves as an advisory board member of International China Concern, a non-profit organization serving vulnerable children in China. She is an Asian Pacific American Leadership Institute (APALI) Fellow and member of the League of Women Voters Cupertino-Sunnyvale. Sylvia is passionate about holistic education that balances academics with social-emotional health to best equip students for future success, and inclusive and civic-minded education to strengthen our community and society. As a school board member of a district that is demographically 72% Asian student body, she wants to provide opportunities and voice for the API community through service on the APISBMA board.
